The roof is one of the biggest investments you can make in your home. Never feel bad for doing your homework on a company to ensure you get great value for your money and you trust them before you hire them.

Have you heard the saying, “buy cheap, buy twice?”

The roof is one of the biggest investments you will make in your home. When done right, it also yields one of the biggest returns on your investment.

For some homeowners, having a stranger working in or around their home for several hours or even days is nerve-wracking. That’s why it’s important to discuss the particulars of your roofing, or any project before they get started working at your home. Never feel bad for doing your homework on a company to ensure you get exactly what you expected. Here at Baltic Roofing we have a saying: “Inspect what you expect”.

1. How much actual roofing experience do they have?

When it comes to roofing, experience counts. Statistics show that almost half of new contractors go out of business in their first two years and even more in the next five years.

What’s worse, a lot of contractors these days spread themselves too thin trying to turn the most profit by selling every home improvement service they possibly can. This approach often leads to shoddy workmanship and bad customer service. Your roof definitely deserves better than that.

We highly recommend you don’t hire a general contractor for your roofing needs. Roofing is a special skill that takes years to master. Unfortunately, poor craftsmanship is putting a black eye on our industry and up to 95% of all new roofs do not meet installation standards.

At Baltic Roofing, we eat, breathe, and sleep roofing.

Our 17 years of experience means you always get the roofing crew that will do the job right, the first time.

2. Read the reviews. What do other customers say about their work?

Would you spend your hard earned money at a restaurant that has dozens of consistently bad reviews? Probably not. Just like bad restaurants, there are a lot of poor quality roofers around Chicago too, and they’re out there leaving a bad taste in the mouths of well intentioned homeowners.

When it’s time for a roof repair or replacement, be extra vigilant in your research. It always pays to read testimonials and customer reviews when choosing a roofer. What other people say about their experience can tell you a lot about the quality of their work and if they care about customer service.

The last thing you want to happen is take a chance on a company with poor or no online reviews at all and then end up having to go online and write a scathing review yourself. Worse yet, you may end up out of pocket hiring a second roofing company to fix the job the first one didn’t do properly.

3. Ask to see samples of their work.

Shopping for a new roof is a lot like picking out a new car – everyone has their own personal style and budget. That’s why selecting your new roof should be exciting, not a chore.

Any reliable roofing company should be willing to show you samples of their past work. Before and after pictures will give you a sense of their experience and may also give you inspiration for your own roofing project.

There is an abundance of choice when it comes to roofing materials. Your roofer should be able to show you the best options and explain the benefits of each. Always pay attention if your roofing consultant asks questions and tries to understand your needs first. At the same time be willing to listen and learn – assuming you are talking to the professional roofing consultant.

4. Ask for a detailed project plan.

Any roofing company worth its salt should be able to give you a step by step breakdown of the process from start to finish, so you feel totally confident and educated about what you’re getting and how long it will take.

To be the best, we follow our proven process, starting with the initial inspection, to diagnostics, to construction, all the way to the final wave goodbye.

We’re here to handle the job exactly as you would expect, day in and day out.

We also respect your time and show up at your house exactly when you expect us. Every scheduled appointment is at an exact time, not between a window of hours. And we make sure to clean everything up so there’s nothing left behind on your property except for a stunning new roof.

5. Are they transparent with price and do they have flexible payment options?

Similar to purchasing a new car, a high quality roof is an investment, not a cost. It’s important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to the price tag. A good roofing company will make sure you never feel surprised, shocked or stressed about the cost.

What you spend will vary depending on your personal budget, the size of your house, the type of materials you choose, and if you decide to invest in some extras like new gutters or a skylight (both add more function and value to your home).

At Baltic Roofing, we partner with lenders to provide flexible and customized payment options so our customers feel comfortable about their long-term investment. After an in-depth consultation, we will customize your project to estimate the exact price, down to the penny, and we’ll do everything we can to fit it into your budget.

6. When possible, secure a warranty or guarantee.

Make sure you understand the warranty that comes with your new roof. A lot of contractors bend over backwards to provide lifetime warranties, but then we ask: whose lifetime is it? What if the company goes out of business in two years?

Baltic Roofing is a proud partner of Owens Corning – a leading roofing brand. As an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, we have access to the best warranties, training, and materials in the industry. That’s why we are able to offer a 10 year workmanship warranty, all backed by Owens Corning, a billion dollar company.

7. Are they properly insured, in case of an accident?

Roofing is a hands-on job – accidents do happen. Unless your chosen roofer is properly insured, you will be liable for injuries and accidents that happen during the work. If there’s an accident on your property, it could end up costing you untold sums in a lawsuit.

With Baltic Roofing, worksite accidents are not on you. We carry $1 million Workers Compensation and $2 million General Liability insurance, which is way above the industry average. And yes, we are insured for roofing trade, the most expensive category, when most of the roofers carry only “Handyman” insurance, which doesn’t cover everything.
